Adenoids are a mass of lymphatic tissue located high in the throat, behind the nose and roof of the mouth, where the nasal passages connect to the throat. They help trap and fight bacteria and viruses, especially in children. Adenoids are most active in early childhood and usually shrink as children grow. Sometimes, enlarged or problematic adenoids may need to be surgically removed in a procedure called an adenoidectomy.
